How we started
Toneel was set up by a small group of friends in 2009. They had originally written and produced some plays as part of KAG (The Kalamitsi Arts Group), which is a group promoting arts and culture in Western Crete.
Toneel Drama Group is now more than 40 strong and has attracted more members each year since it was formed. It is focused on Vamos in the Municipality of Apokoronas but draws members and support from a wide area of Western Crete.
Toneel is actually Dutch for “play” or drama. The name was suggested by Dutch members when the group started, and it seems we are stuck with it! We are a non-profit making group. The money we receive from ticket sales is used to meet production costs or is recycled to purchase equipment (lighting and sound), the construction of sets, and acquisition of props and costumes. Any surpluses go to support local charities.
Our current venues are varied. We have performed in the Vamos amphitheatre for summer productions and Vamos School for winter productions. We have also performed in Kefalas Environmental centre and open air tavernas in the area, including Tropicana in Georgioupolis, Cretan Corner in Megala Horafia and Giannis Taverna in Kokino Horio.
We have regular social events, where all members show off their individual talents.
Our aim is to provide entertainment to our audiences and give our members the chance to have fun, experience working in the theatre and learn new skills in a safe, supportive environment. We also intend to hold acting workshops.
Very few members have any previous experience in drama before coming to Crete. We welcome anyone who wants to join the group to be involved in any way – not just in acting but also in building sets, supporting productions either technically or more generally in front of house roles etc.
We also have a script reading group who are on the lookout for new plays. If you have any ideas we would be delighted to hear from you – bearing in mind the limitations of our venues.
We also look to work with other groups in the Apokoronas area of Crete to promote arts and culture in the area for the benefit of all citizens.
We are a members' club. Members elect a small management team each year to manage the everyday activites of the group.
